A much needed addition to the bayside offering of Port Melbourne, Harry & Frankie is an owner-operated wine retailer and neighbourhood bar. The venue was conceived as a place where customers could share and enjoy some of their favourite wines while discovering a new drop along the way. The focus was to convey the story and winemaker behind each bottle in an unpretentious, beautiful and honest way.

Foolscap worked through the brand concept after developing an understanding of the vision for the business. Through use of design treatments such as the extensive ‘wine wall’ display and a custom designed timber bar of inlayed panels, Foolscap responded with a venue that feels instantly familiar, charming and all about the wine. Whether popping in to browse for a take away bottle or taking time to try a new wine at the bar, knowledgeable and approachable staff complement the customer experience.

Whilst respecting and evoking the charm of a neighbourhood wine bar, the design intertwines a number of custom elements that give the space a personality all of its own. A specially commissioned print by renowned illustrators Craig & Karl was applied to cork panels which line the impressive vaulted ceiling, a handmade leadlight window (with vintage glass design and H&F brandmark developed by Foolscap) overlooks the space. The brand identity unites a respect for tradition and craftsmanship and gives a ‘worn-in’ feel to the young business, which, like wine, will only improve with age. The thinking behing the design will allow the brand concept to roll out to other locations.
